Pro tip
For a very specific subgroup of undergrads who get to choose their final year project supervisor and want to do a phd, and also can’t deal with life.
For pity’s sake do not ask your supervisor if you can do a phd with them, particulalry if you have also done research assistanting for them - seems like a great idea, build a good working relationship etc. - no, worst idea ever. You’ll spend the entire year agonising over what happens if they realise that you’re doing a shitty job on your project and regret agreeing to supervise you if you get the funding, highlighted nicely at the end with a nice couple of months where they have your project, quite possibly may have marked it, but have said nothing to you about it and might be sitting rolling around their office with laughter at this moment at how shitty it was and how you thought you could do a phd.
And then you get an offer from someone else for summer RA work and have to email them to check there’s nothing you can do for them in the summer instead before you accept it because you’ve been doing summer work for them for the last two years and you’re not sure if it looks like you’re not keen if you go off and do stuff for someone else instead. Despite the fact that you don’t really want to work with them this summer because if you then don’t get the funding it’s going to be awkward as.
Yeah.
